APERIS Overview

APERIS is an acronym for the Antarctic Preservation, Exploration and Research International Station.

APERIS is a very new station, with its construction only having been completed in October of 2010. Its creation was an international project intended to further the goals of scientific research, Antarctic exploration, and ecological preservation. The lingua franca at the station is English, and it can snugly hold around fifty people at one time.

On the 25th of January, 2011, after three and a half months of operation, the first reports of anomalous events were recorded in the APERIS log.

Regular travel in and out of APERIS is possible during the summer months via the Sky Blu airstrip. During the Antarctic winter, it is very difficult to leave Antarctica due to limited services and poor weather conditions. Wintering (the extended period of remaining at a station through winter) at APERIS is planned to begin on the 17th of May 2011.

APERIS is located at the north-east of the Ronne Ice Shelf, at -60.866455°, -76.886738°.

It is approx. 100 miles from the sea, to its north, and approx. 225 miles from the nearest airstrip, Sky Blu.

• Berkner Island, east of APERIS.
• Korff Island, south of APERIS.
• The sea at the northern edge of the Ronne Ice Sheet.
• Various cave systems beneath the ice.
